Hyderabad: The call for a sewage treatment plant near Ameenpur lake has fallen on deaf ears, as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage  Board (HMWSSB) has shown no interest.

During the last few weeks, the lake has attracted attention as a top cop from Telangana has started taking interest in its conservation. Along with this, district officials of Medak including the collector were involved in the cleaning activities and are pushing conservation  strategies for the lake. Many bird watchers were also involved in the operation. However, HMWSSB officials are looking the other way, even though conservationists are seeking an end to the direct discharge of sewage into the lake.

The Telangana State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB) is drawing flak for allowing the inflow of sewage into the lake. However, a TSPCB official said, “We are doing whatever we can. We sought help from some companies. They agreed to give '30 lakh for constructing the STP. TSPCB is also ready to put in an equal amount. This will meet around 50 per cent of the STP’s cost. But the HMWSSB has not identified land or invited tenders.”

Ameenpur lake hosts hundreds of bird species.
