Hyderabad: Fifty cases of people suffering from withdrawal symptoms of toddy came to the Erragadda Institute of Mental Health for treatment. Most of the patients are coming from in and around Ranga Reddy district and some of them are from the other districts of Telangana. The Institute of Mental Health has posted five doctors round-the-clock in the hospital to monitor these cases as patients are coming in the morning to late in the evening. Apart from that nursing students have also been called by the government to help handle patients.

Dr Pramod Kumar, superintendent explained, “The details of their consumption habits are not forthcoming. But we have been able to assess that most of the symptoms are due to the non-availability of adulterated toddy. They are kept in the hospital for two days and then discharged.” At the same time, psychiatrists have been asked to counsel patients so that they can work towards giving up the habit. Some psychiatrists have been posted in the districts of Nizamabad and Mahbubnagar to help tackle the situation.
