BENGALURU: It was a welcome break from the daily humdrum for the Hulimavu police recently. The normally tensed atmosphere at the station lightened up as a bubbly nine-year-old boy, who was lost, made his way into the police station and straight into the hearts of the cops. The police, responding to his plight, worked tirelessly to reunite him with his mother.

Kiran was spotted wandering the streets of Kalena Agrahara on Bannerghatta Road by three men on Wednesday. Luckily for Kiran, they acted responsibly and alerted the police. A Hoysala jeep was dispatched immediately from the Madiwala police station to bring the boy to the station. What followed, however, surprised even the police.

He was understandably nervous when he stepped into the station. But soon, he turned the place into his own little playground. He had fun playing with the walkie-talkies, motorcycle sirens, eating chocolates and even wandering into the lockup area. The cops, charmed by the little boy, happily slipped into the role of baby-sitters and even answered many of Kiran’s questions.

“When we bring lost children to the station, they are too nervous to talk. It’s always best to give them some time to relax first. Kiran too was scared and reticent. Only when Savitha, a woman police constable, was sent to speak with him, did he open up.

To put him at ease, we talked to him about his favourite foods and his likes and dislikes. When he was relaxed enough, we asked him about his family and how he got lost,” said the inspector.
It turned out that Kiran’s mother, a tailor, raises him on her own. “He told us that he got lost when he was traveling on a bus with his mother and didn’t know his way back home,” the officer said.

“But he knew that his house is in Garvebhavi Palya near Hosur Road,” said another police officer. It was a happy ending as Kiran was reunited with his mother easily, as he knew the address. But then, there were some teary eyes among the cops, who knew they would miss the child’s pranks.
