Kochi: Three persons were arrested on Monday by the Kuruppampady police for culling stray dogs following a complaint filed by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Mr Jose Maveli, chairman of ‘Theruvunaya Unmoolana Sangham’ (union for elimination of stray dogs), an organization that heads a campaign for culling of dangerous stray dogs, its president  O.M. Joy and dogcatcher Ranjan Varapuzha were taken into custody and later released on bail.

The trio were charged under IPC section 428, 429 and section 11 (1) of the Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals Act, said Mr A. C. Manojkumar, Sub-Inspector.

The police, with the help of a four-member veterinary team, excavated the carcasses of four dogs from Pulluvazhy and Kolencherry and sent the same for post-mortem.

The association, which was formed last week, has so far culled over 30 stray dogs.

“The authorities are taking no action to prevent dog bites. We’re forced to launch the campaign after many children and women were attacked by stray dogs. We are killing only those dogs which are found to be dangerous,” Mr Jose Maveli, who is also the chairman of Janaseva Sisu Bhavan, said.
