Hyderabad: An engineering graduate crashed his Honda City car gifted to him by his parents a year ago in the wee hours of Monday. The driver and two of his friends, also engineering graduates, died in the accident, while a friend was injured seriously. Police said the driver lost control of the car, hit the divider on Road No: 2 in Banjara Hills and rammed into a shop shutter.
The incident happened at around 4 am. Police suspect the passengers were drunk. They recovered an alcohol bottle from the car. The victims, all residents of Uppal, had immersed their Ganesh idol in Saroornagar lake, and had come to see Khairatabad Ganesh and other pooja spots in the Banjara Hills area. The injured person who is undergoing treatment at a private hospital is critical. Police identified the dead as M. Sai Teja, P. Sharath Kumar Goud and T. Naren Sai, all 23, and the injured as K. Karthik Reddy.
The victims were residents of Swaroopa Colony in Uppal and were staying at Tirumala Castle Apartments. The four along with some friends in the apartment complex formed the Friends Colony Association and arranged a Ganesh pooja in their locality. They made arrangements for immersion and immersed the idol in Saroornagar lake on Sunday. After returning from the immersion, they decided to see Khairatabad Ganesh and took Teja’s car.
Teja drove the car. After visiting Khairatabad Ganesh they drove towards Banjara Hills to visit other pooja spots. Police said Teja did not notice the steep curve before the junction near TV 9 office as he was speeding. “He hit the divider. When he tried to pull the car back on to the road it rammed into the shop. The airbags opened, but could not save them,” said inspector Murali Krishna. Teja, Sharath and Naren died on the spot while Karthik was taken to a private hospital. Doctors placed him on ventilator. His condition is critical.
Families weep for their dead sons:
The enthusiasm of the four youths to watch the Ganesh immersion ceremony proved disastrous for them. T. Naren Sai, was the only son of his parents. He had cleared Civil Service Prelims and was set to travel to New Delhi in October to prepare for the Mains test. P. Sharath Kumar Goud, was preparing for Groups and SI selection, while M. Sai Teja, was the only son of his parents. He was planning to go abroad for higher studies.
Sai Teja is the third child of M. Vidyasagar and M. Aruna, a head nurse at Osmania GH. He has two elder sisters. Naren is the only son of SIB head constable T. Ramaswamy. He completed engineering in 2014 from KPR Engineering College. Sharath Chandra Goud is the eldest of the three sons of P. Amrutha Goud and Indira. He completed engineering in 2014 and was preparing for Groups. “He wanted to be a police officer,” said Sharath’s father Amrutha Goud.
Karthik Reddy’s father runs an auto-rickshaw. Due to the family’s poverty his uncle Srinivas Reddy, a government teacher, brought him to Hyderabad and was financing his studies. He completed Engineering in 2014 from KPR Engineering College. Karthik and Naren were good friends. He had a habit of sleeping at Naren's house occasionally, and would come back to his place in the morning. Sunday night, Karthik told his uncle that he was going to see the immersion.
"When I called him around 11pm, he told me he was in the immersion process. When he did not return home late at night, I thought he was sleeping at his friend's house," said his uncle Srinivas Reddy. Karthik was on ventilator since morning, Monday. Doctor said he suffered bleeding in lungs and two fractures on his left leg. "We performed a surgery on his leg. He is still unconscious and his condition is critical," said a source from the hospital.
