Hyderabad: Fear Psychosis is the main reason for the large number of syringe attacks that were reported in the city in the recent past. People are continuously talking about such attacks and are panicking. As a result of this, a thought conversion is taking place, due to which they assume that they will be attacked by a “Syringe Psycho” when they are alone or are in secluded places, say experts.
“The Intra Psychic conflict” that arises in a person’s mind, due to continuously thinking of such incidents, puts them in such vulnerable situations. Due to the incidents in different parts of the city, people are constantly talking about it and became very anxious about the same happening to them. This is just a hysterical reaction that people tend to go through over a period of time and their experiences, say experts.
With such situations around, people, especially children became extra careful. Parents are often seen advising their kids to be careful of such attacks, not to move around alone in the surroundings or at secluded places. As a result, when they are alone or passing through secluded places, they assume that they will be attacked by some person. “Due to constant thinking about a particular incident, it gets imprinted in their minds and a intra psychic conflict arises. This leads to a person making such assumptions and react accordingly” said Dr Preethi Swaroop, secretary of the Hyderabad Psychiatric Society.
“One should understand that an attacker will have a specific target, unlike the incidents reported where people were attacked randomly. People should also avoid abnormal reaction to small incidents like spotting a needle at a public place like a bus stop,” said Dr Naresh Vadlamani, senior consultant psychiatrist at Columbus Hospital.
