THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even as 93 working days were lost due to various reasons like rain, the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) authorities are hopeful of carrying out the trial flight  from the greenfield airport by December 31  by working overtime. Some foreign airlines have shown interest to operate from the new airport.

“To compensate for the days lost, the work is now progressing in three shifts so as to meet the December 31 deadline,” Ports Minister K. Babu told reporters here on Tuesday after a general body meeting of KIAL.

Commercial operations from the airport are scheduled to commence from mid-2016. KIAL managing director G. Chandramouli had recently attended the  World Routes 2015 international event at Durban and showcased the upcoming airport.

Various Gulf-based airlines had shown interest in operating to the new airport. Some of them had also sought further details on expected traffic in the route, said the minister.
