HyderabadWater from Pallecheruvu flooded the state highway and nearby colonies on Monday, creating hours of chaos and several kilometer-long traffic jams in Mailardevpally. The road towards Chandrayangutta from Aramghar was under two feet water after some men damaged a bund at the lake that had been renovated by the government before Ganesh immersion.

Police has booked a case following a complaint from Irrigation department officials.
The perpetrators, however, are yet to be identified.
Water entered several houses in residential colonies like Pata Basti and Alinagar, creating panic. Thousands of commuters including people going to the airport got stuck at Aramgarh road due to the traffic jam as the police and government officials could clear the road only by early morning.

After the police found that the new bund had been broken, they took help from the Irrigation department and construction workers to build another one to stop the water.
“We have booked a case against the accused under IPC Sections 430 (mischief by injury to works of irrigation or by wrongfully diverting water) and 431 (mischief by injury to public road, bridge, river or channel). We are still identifying the offenders, however, we suspect that the land owners around the lake are behind the incident,” said Mailardevpally police inspector S. Venkat Reddy.

According to the police, the lake is located on pattadar land, and the bund was constructed by a nawab some 40 years ago. The government had repaired the bund a few weeks before the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. However, the water level rose due to the recent rains and soon after the Ganesh immersion, water started spilling into adjacent lands. Police suspects that upset owners of these lands broke the bund and channeled the water into the main road and the housing colonies. The bund was suspected to have been broken after 7 pm on Monday.
