Mysuru: With expensive marriages driving farmers over the brink and making them take their lives, the Mysuru district administration has come up with a novel method to discourage rural folk from taking the extreme step. They are holding mass marriages and have even advanced the mass wedding ‘Shubharambha’ to be held at Nanjangud on November 25 to November 28 considering the overwhelming response.
Officials of the district administration are hoping to bring about a change in the mindset of farmers in the district and the public in general to conduct simple, inter-caste and mass marriages. They are encouraging the rich and affluent to set a model for farmers, by keeping the applications open for both rural and urban couples irrespective of their financial status. Each couple will be given a set of items including Maangalya, Belli Kaalungura (toe ring), Baasinga, garlands and one set of clothes for the groom and a saree for the bride worth Rs 18,000.
