Vijaya Bank burglary: One detained

KASARGOD: The Kasargod police has taken a Manjeshwaram native, who allegedly helped the main suspect in the Viajaya Bank branch burglary to take the shops below branch at Cheruvathur on rent, into custody.
Police sources said that they are creating a sketch of the main suspect, Ismail, in the bank burglary in which 19 kg of gold worth Rs 4 crore and Rs 3 lakh in cash were stolen, with the help of CCTV footage. Police said the gang seemed to have fled Kasargod as they had got more than 36 hours after committing the crime.
Police found out that Ismail had submitted fake documents for the rent agreement to building owner Abdul Rahman. Police said pawned ornaments of 706 customers had been stolen from the bank.
The bank had security guards but only during the banking hours and the burglars had planned well in advance to commit the crime on Saturday, knowing that the bank would be closed for two days.
An expert team from Kozhikode is helping the Kasargod police to create the sketch of the main suspect. Police sources said that the investigation team has got clear clues about the burglars.
The police suspects the hands of an interstate burglary gang and is trying to trace, with the help of cyber crime wing, the mobile phone calls made from the locality on the day of the crime and prior to it.
