THIRUVANANTHPAURAM: While the  CPM has launched a state-wide campaign to expose the alleged move by the RSS to topple the existing reservation system, it has also reiterated the demand for amending the Constitution to provide quotas to the economically weaker sections among the forward communities.

At a press conference here to brief the media on the deliberations of the state secretariat, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan alleged that the leaders of backward communities were not keen on reservations as it did not cover the creamy layer.

This was  why the SNDP and the Muslim League were mum on the RSS move to do away with reservation, he said.

“The BJP  considers the RSS as its Supreme Court and its chief Mohan Bhagwat had categorically opposed the reservation system. The BJP is waiting for two-thirds majority in Parliament to abolish reservations. The Patel agitation in Gujarat is actually an anti- reservation stir propped up by the RSS,” he said and added,  “the RSS is desperate to bring back the varnaashrama system of the past.”

Since  job opportunities in government sector had fallen significantly, the government should introduce quota in private sector as well, he  said.

He demanded immediate resolution of the ongoing plantation workers’ stir. “More than three  lakh workers are on strike but the government seems to be siding with the plantation owners at a time when the workers are not even getting wages on par  with their Tamil Nadu counterparts,” he added.

The party criticised the government for cutting down the supply of essential food commodities to ration shops. The dues of social welfare pensions have been pending for the past four to eleven months, he added.
