KOZHIKODE: The A.P. Kanthapuram section of Sunnis has stopped the behind-the-curtain manoeuvring and is all set to form its own mass organization.  The new organization, ‘Kerala Muslim Jamaat,’ will be officially launched  at a function in Malappuram on October 10.

“All above the age of 18 adhering to our traditions could be part of the organization. It’s not a political party. We have not had an organization above the level of Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (SYS) which caters to the youth,” said SYS state committee member N. Ali Abdulla.

According to sources, the  labour community would be given preference in the new organization with an eye on merchants and fishermen.

“It will decide the stand in many matters, including politics and social issues, which would be beneficial to the interests of Muslims,” said the source.

Though Jamaat will not directly intervene in politics, it would act as a pressure group. The constitution and objectives of the new organization will be revealed at the launching function.

A.P. Sunnis have been supporting the LDF in elections unlike the other Sunni faction, E.K., which has  rallied  behind Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

But recently, there had been fissures in the relations with the LDF and votes were switched over to the UDF  in the last couple of elections.

A few months back, LDF independent MLAs, K.T. Jaleel and P.T.A. Raheem had held discussions with Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobaker Musalyar allegedly on behalf of the CPM.
