PM’s Mudra scheme: Banks given loan targets
The collector appealed to bankers to provide more loans to youth in Thanjavur district

THANJAVUR: Loans to the tune of Rs 4.57 crore were distributed to 263 persons under the Mudra scheme of the Prime Minister at Thanjavur on Thursday.
N.Subbaiyan, the district collector distributed the loans to the beneficiaries. The collector appealed to bankers to provide more loans to youth in Thanjavur district as the district is industrially backward. ‘Mudra’ loans are given for starting small-scale industries.
The loans disbursed here on Thursday were given for starting handicrafts production centres, weaving, provision stores and eateries. The collector said that the Prime Minister has introduced the ‘Make in India’ concept to boost production in the country. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had organised the Global Investors Meet (GIM) and mobilised an investment of Rs 2.50 lakh crore.
In Thanjavur district, 50,000 youth graduate out of colleges every year. Of them 15,000 go for higher studies, 15,000 for jobs in private companies and 15,000 youth could become entrepreneurs. Banks should help at least 1000 of them in a year by providing loans, the collector urged.
Sivakumar, assistant general manager of State Bank of India, Siddharthan, senior regional manager of Indian Overseas Bank and Subramanian, district development manager of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) were among those who participated in the
function.
