University of Hyderabad students make a fashion statement
The university also did away with the age-old gown system this year for the convocation
Hyderabad: Ignoring the varsity’s suggested dress code of wearing traditional, handloom attire, the 17th convocation ceremony of the University of Hyderabad was a colourful affair with most students wearing Western clothes.
Only a handful of students turned out in the optional dress code of kurta pajama or salwar kameez/saris. However, angavastrams were quite popular though it was optional.
Of the 921 students present for convocation, more than 700 bought angavastrams with the UoH logo for the ceremony.
The varsity had made angavastrams part of the ‘compulsory’ dress code stating that students would have to buy it at the convocation venue for Rs 200, but after protests by students, the angavastram were made optional and also refundable after the ceremony.
The university also did away with the age-old gown system this year for the convocation.
Some students were also seen throwing their angavastrams in the year like mortarboards while posing for photographs.
Governor E.S.L. Narsimhan, chancellor Dr C. Rangarajan and VC Prof. Appa Rao were present to give away the awards and degrees to the students.
