BENGALURU: In a tragic incident, a 38-year-old man ended his life by hanging after hearing that his wife had committed suicide by popping sleeping pills. Family dispute and debts are said to be the reason for the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Basavalingappa, and his wife Mangalamma, 32. The couple hailed from Bananthahalli village near Akkur in Channapatna taluk of Ramanagara district.

According to the police, the couple had got married about 12 years ago and had two children.  Basavalingappa had agricultural land in the village and he had reportedly borrowed up to Rs 4 lakh from banks and other financiers. But the yield was poor and he was not able to repay his debt. As a result the banks sent him notices while the financiers were visiting home everyday and asking him for the repayment.

“With no other options left, he had come to Hongasandra near Bommanahalli in Madivala two months ago and had started working in a bakery. These developments had led to frequent fights between the couple. On Friday afternoon, Mangalamma ended her life by popping excessive sleeping pills and succumbed on her way to the hospital. Some of the relatives informed Basavalingappa about the incident. Upset over his wife’s death, he committed suicide by hanging at his room in Hongasandra. The incident came to light on Saturday morning,” the police said.
The Akkur police have registered a case in connection with the death of the woman, while the Madivala police have registered the case in regard to her husband’s death.
