Kanchi seer honours 102-year-old Vedic scholar

The distribution of welfare aids apart, numerous awards were given away to meritorious persons on the occasion

Kanchi mutt Peetathipathi Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal presents the Yagnavalkya award to Parasurama Ganapatigal on Saturday.

Chennai: The 81st jayanthi of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Swamigal of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, was celebrated in a grand manner here on Saturday. The distribution of welfare aids apart, numerous awards were given away to meritorious persons on the occasion.

Notable among the award winners is the 102-year-old Vedic scholar Sri Parasurama Ganapatigal, who is still teaching Vedas and Sastras. He was conferred with the Kaliyuga Yagnavalkya award. Bhagawat Seva Rathna, Guru Seva Rathna, Jana Seva Rathna, Prathama Achar-ya Rathna, Vidhya Sahaya Rathna, Parihara Jothida Sikamani awards besides other awards were presented by the seer at a function held under the joint auspices of the Janakalyan and Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam Chennapuri Baktha Jana Sabha at Sri Krishnagana Sabha, T.Nagar, here.

According to V. Subramanian, secretary Janakalyan, Chennai,, about 185 service welfare organisations honoured the Kanchi seer. Speaking on the occasion Sri Jayendra called upon the people to imbibe guru bakthi, which was very essential to get closer to god. “An ideal guru leads his disciples and mankind to god, like Adi Shankaracharya had done,” the Swamigal  said and urged the people to read the teachings of Adi Shankaracharya who had established the mutt in Kanchi, and get enlightened.
