THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With Achuthanandan slowly emerging as star campaigner for local polls, the CPM central leadership has put on hold the move to initiate disciplinary action against him at least till after Assembly polls.
Even though the state leadership is not too keen on giving too much prominence to the veteran since they want Assembly polls to be fought under the leadership of politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan, they are wary of Achuthanandan’s mass popularity and appeal even outside the party.
A section of central leadership of the party which too wants keep the organisation above an individual, does not want to take the risk of annoying the opposition leader as it could adversely affect the LDF’s electoral prospects.
However, the latest move means that the future proceedings of six member politburo commission which had been entrusted with the task sorting out the internal problems of Kerala unit, would stop forthwith.
It may be recalled that the panel was constituted under Prakash Karat and then those close to VS had even accused him of having a soft corner for Pinarayi Vijayan. However, after the Vishakhapatnam party Congress the mantle fell on incumbent general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
The commission was mandated to look into various issues connected with internal problems of the state unit. While Achuthanandan had been accused of anti party activities and also of defying the leadership and official party line, the veteran leader had charged Pinarayi led leadership with scuttling inner party democracy and silencing critics, suspending or expelling them from the party.
