Kochi: The move by Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam general secretary Vellappally Natesan to align with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the coming local body elections and possibly for the Assembly polls has given the anti-Natesan factions in the Yogam a rallying point.

They have even started negotiating with the Left Democratic Front for a possible political help.

A former senior functionary of the Yogam told Deccan Chronicle that the Ezhava community had all these years ignored the fight they had been conducting against Mr Natesan’s ‘autocratic and fraudulent’ dealings within the Yogam.

“Mr Natesan’s move to identify himself with the Hindutwa forces is unacceptable even to those who ignored our fight,” he said.

“It has a political urgency now, and we would like to make use of it,” he said. The impact of the strident Hindutwa politics advanced by the BJP will have only peripheral impact on the community, he said.

The people who are understood to be behind the movement have their own points of strength within the community; many are holding important positions in institutions that work for the advancement of the community. Some are former colleagues of Mr Natesan in Yogam, too.

It is understood that the rebels have called a meeting of people who share their opinion on Mr Natesan’s political move in Thalassery on Wednesday.
