KarimnagarThe management of Sri Raja Rajeshwara Degree College has embarked on a novel mission. The institution in association with Telangana state’s department of language and culture has decided to revive Perini Shivatandavam, an ancient dance form of Telangana which once enjoyed a royal status but vanished over a period of time. The 60-year-old institution is organising a first-of-its kind 15-day-long residential camp by roping in vast experienced dance master. A total of 70 students have been undergoing rigorous training from October 1.

Elizabeth Rani of mathematics department at SRRDC and convener of the training camp, said that the residential camp was conceived to bring back the past glory of this region’s dance form and to promote it. Jakka Srikrishna, who carries 33-year long experience in teaching Perini Shivatandavam and his assistants were deployed for training the students. There are 40 girls and 30 boys who are learning the dance form.
Dr B. Madhusudan Reddy, principal of institution, stated that the department of language and culture had given its nod and sanctioned Rs 1 lakh for organising the camp after a proposal was sent to it few days back.

“The revival of Perini will help Telangana state to have its own classical dance form. The neighbouring state AP has Kuchipudi.” The teacher, Srikri-shna, said that the Perini originated and prospered during Kakatiya period, around 700 years ago. “However, the dance form vanished over the years. Padmashriawardee Dr Nataraja Ramakrishna tried to revive it  a few years back. The dance signifies Raudra rasam (terrible) and is divided into two types, Perini Shivatandavam and Lasyam. Shivatandam is practised by male dancers and girls do the Lasyam. The armed forces of Kakatiya dynasty used to learn this before preparing for a battle,” he added.
