Students of IIT-Madras have undertaken a study to see how the city's garbage dumped at Pallikaranai and Kodungaiyur can be managed better.
Bengaluru: Appalled by the failure of BBMP engineers to ensure cleanliness and to maintain a garbage-free footpath, District in-charge minister Ramalinga Reddy on Monday suspended two engineers.

During inspection of Bengaluru (South) zone to check the condition of road infrastructure and solid waste management along with Mayor B. N. Manjunath Reddy and other corporators, Mr. Reddy came down heavily on  engineers and contractors for not keeping the footpaths free from garbage.

Mr. Reddy suspended assistant executive engineer Bhaskar and assistant engineer Jaikumar. The contractor was penalized Rs 50,000 for the lapse. He held a meeting with the officials of BBMP South zone and lambasted them for not filling potholes as per the fixed deadline. Engineers across all eight zones had been directed to fill potholes. But, in some areas potholes were not filled due to the incessant rains  Mr. Reddy said that stern action would be taken against engineers neglecting to fill potholes.

Mayor, his team off to Japan for lessons in Solid Waste Management
The Japan government has sent an invitation  to BBMP to come and observe their work on Solid Waste Management and to exchange ideas.

If all goes as planned, Mayor B. N. Manjunath Reddy, commissioner G. Kumar Naik and two others, will visit Yokohama to study the SWM system being practiced in Japan. The junket is scheduled for six days from October 18. The names of two other officials will be finalized shortly, added sources.

The Japanese government has offered to bear the cost of the journey both ways, along with paying for accommodation, said sources.

The earlier planned trips with a similar purpose, however,  remained on paper. Former deputy mayor S. Harish along with a few officials had visited Israel, to view and study the  world-class technology being used by them for SWM. But it was all fruitless. Despite passing a resolution in the BBMP council to implement the technology, it was never taken forward.

Also, delegations were sent to Mumbai and other cities in the country. But these remained mere excursions for those who went, concluded sources.
