DAVANGERE: The sale of liquor has been banned in a few villages in Harapanahalli taluk of the district setting a model to other villages. If anybody is found violating the ban order, they will find themselves behind bars.
Contrary to allegations that staff of the excise department are supporting the illegal sale of liquor, the staff themselves have put up a board on which it is scribbled that liquor sale has been banned in the village. The department has taken this step under pressure from residents of Guledahatti tanda, Keregudihalli and Chikka Kabballi. Sale of liquor in the villages has been stopped for the past three years. Even Nicchapur village in the taluk has adopted the same step about nine years ago. Leaders in these villages said that with the help of Stree Shakti groups and youth associations, the drastic step has been taken and anybody found violating it, will be the ‘guests’ of the police
“Even though sale of liquor has been banned, a few people come are still consuming it. We are helpless when it comes to dealing with them. Most youth are not consuming liquor, so we are living in peace,” said members of Stree Shakti group.
