Volkswagen halts sale of Polo over 'technical issues' in India
The issue is unrelated to the emissions scandal in the United States and Europe
New Delhi: Volkswagen India on Wednesday halted the sale of its popular Polo car in India over unspecified "technical issues" unrelated to the emissions scandal in the United States and Europe, a company spokesman said.
Executives at the Indian arm of the German carmaker asked dealers in a letter "not to physically deliver any Polo vehicle (all variants) with immediate effect till further notice from VW".
The spokesperson told AFP the decision was temporary and would be reviewed soon.
"We will be coming out with further details," the spokesperson said, adding that all other models would be available to Indian customers.
He said the decision to pull Polos was not related to the emissions scandal involving over 11 million diesel cars, which were equipped with software that switches the engine to a low-emissions mode during tests.
The world's biggest carmaker by sales has launched investigations into who was behind the scam.
Volkswagen's new boss Matthias Mueller said Wednesday the auto giant would need more than a year to fix all its pollution-cheating cars, as the company suspended four employees suspected of being behind the deception.
India produced 20,030 Polos in the April-August period this year, with 13,827 units sold in the domestic market.
