KOZHIKODE: An indefinite strike call by cleaners at Kozhikode International Airport forced the Airport Authority of India to convene a meeting with the Chennai-based contracting company that hired them on Tuesday .

Some 95 cleaning staff resumed duty only after its officials assured them to address their issues.

They went on strike from Tuesday morning alleging that the company had taken back a good percentage of the bonus given to them.

They also said they had been delaying the payment of their monthly salary and refusing compulsory holidays.

The AAI officials called for an emergency meeting with the company and union leaders as they declined to work.

“Some of our workers had to pay more money than their monthly salary back to the company as it said the bonus given to us was in excess of the government policy. However, now they have agreed to repay the amount that had been deducted from our monthly salary,” K. Premadas, a representative of the cleaning staff union , said.

He said the company defaulted in monthly payments and did not provide compulsory holidays as per the government policy.

“They have agreed to discuss our other demands in the presence of the labour commissioner on October 20,” he said.
