Hyderabad: Panchayat raj minister K.T. Rama Rao on Tuesday said the 1.25 lakh-km Water Grid pipelines being laid now to supply drinking water to every household would become the lifeline of Telangana state in three years. He said the Rs 36,000-crore project was being taken up to ensure that no one in the state, especially women, would have to come to the streets or walk kilometres to collect water from public taps or tankers.

Replying to a debate on the Water Grid in the Assembly, Mr Rao said it would be difficult to meet the deadline since the pipelines have to cross railway tracks at 226 places, 540 locations on national highways, 379 locations on R&B highways, 6,715 locations on panchayat roads and 674 locations on irrigation canals. Nevertheless, the TRS government is firm on its promise of not seeking votes in the 2019 elections if it fails to complete the project by then.

“The Water Grid is the dream and brainchild of Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. It will cover all TS districts barring Hyderabad. In Hyderabad, it will cover the region outside ORR. Within ORR region, HMWSSB will continue to supply drinking water but we will supply bulk treated water to HMWSSB,” he said.
