A 15-year-old boy was washed away in a stormwater drain in Veeranapalya
Bengaluru: A 15-year-old boy was washed away in a stormwater drain in Veeranapalya behind Manyata Tech Park on Wednesday evening.
The victim, Prakash – son of Venkatesh, a painter, and Jaya, school attendant – was playing with his brother Surya, 18, and friend Charles, 19 near the Raja Kaluve when the water level suddenly rose with excess water from Jakkur Lake coming into the drain. Prakash was caught in the strong current and washed away, despite efforts by Surya to pull him to safety, the police said.
Mr Vikas Kumar Vikas, DCP (North-east), said, “Surya told us that the force of water was so much that Prakash was sucked into a pipe in the drain and he came out on the other side unconscious. In a flash, his body was washed away.”
Prakash, a ninth standard student from Tamil Sangham School in D.J. Halli, was staying at P&T Colony near Ambedkar College in D.J. Halli. He had skipped school and was playing near the drain when the incident occurred around 4 pm.
The Fire and Emergency Services Department officials, who had gone to the spot with two fire tenders at 5 pm, called off the search operation around 7.30 pm because of heavy rain in the area. The search team from NDRF, Fire and Emergency Services, BBMP and other government agencies will resume the operation on Thursday morning.
