COIMBATORE: The immunisation programme initiated by Union government, ‘mission indradhanush’ was launched here on Wednesday and will continue till October 14. ‘Mission indradhanush’ programme aims to cover all the children from 0 to 2 years of age who have either not been vaccinated or are partially vaccinated against the seven key diseases. Through this mission, children will be vaccinated against hepatitis B, diphtheria, polio, tetanus, measles, whooping cough and tuberculosis.
Expectant mothers will also be immunised for tetanus under the programme. “Our target is to reach out 2, 835 children from 0 to 2 years and around 125 antenatal mothers within Coimbatore corporation limits,” informed K Santhosh Kumar, city health officer (CHO).
The health department undertook a survey in the corporation areas to identify infants who have not been vaccinated or only partially vaccinated. About 90 nurses working in different health centres collected the data.
“Those mothers who missed taking their children for immunization will now get the benefit. Some lose their immunization card or migrate to different places. Apart from the regular vaccination programme this is an additional programme to eradicate the various diseases among the children and mothers,” said the CHO.
