BENGALURU: The South East division police have cracked the Davanam Jewellers gold heist case two months after it was reported. The case had left the police officials perplexed as there were hardly any clues about the burglars, who had escaped with gold and platinum ornaments.

Anand, 28, a resident of C.K. Palya off Bannerghatta Road, has been detained in this connection and the police have recovered nearly two kg of gold jewels, platinum jewels, a Mahindra Scorpio jeep and other valuables worth over Rs 50 lakh from the accused.

On August 8, there was theft in three shops including Davanam Jewellers located at Commercial Street. The miscreants had gained access into the jewellery shop by cutting open the tin roofing of the top floor and then entering through a door by breaking the lock. They had also taken away the hard disk in which the CCTV footage is stored. The case had left the police clueless and they had suspected the offence was committed by 2-3 people. Initially, it was not even known what jewels had the miscreants decamped with, but later the shop management reported that valuables worth over Rs 2 crore were stolen.

Police sources said they picked up Anand based on various clues including the footage recorded by CCTV cameras installed by other shops in Commercial Street. “Anand was arrested five months ago and was sent to jail. After 45-50 days, he was released on bail and again committed this theft. When we were going through the CCTV footage related to Davanam case, he was identified and picked up. He is involved in at least 25 cases and was arrested several times earlier. His modus operandi is as follows: He moves around alone in his SUV and identifies the places where he could commit theft. Later, he returns in the night and commits burglaries all alone,” an official said.

He is into committing burglaries since he was around 20-years-old.
