New Delhi: After a dreadful lynching and countless riot-mongering hate speeches, it has emerged that the meat procured from 50-year-old Ikhlaq’s house was mutton and not beef after all.

The meat samples were sent to Mathura for forensic tests on September 28, but the new revelation might not have the expected bearing on the case as the report submitted by the UP government to the Home Ministry omits 'beef consumption' or 'cow slaughter'.

Instead, the report says that a lynch mob attacked the victim on allegation of having consumed 'meat of an animal banned form slaughter.'

A crowd of around 200 persons, largely youngsters, attacked the house of Iqlakh, a resident of the Bisada village in UP after rumours were spread in the village that a cow has been slaughtered and beef was stored in his house.

The mob beat Iqlakh to death while his 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured in the attack and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Meanwhile the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said that the Centre cannot directly interfere in the Dadri killing case as it is the prime responsibility of the state. "Prime Minister has given me responsibility. Regarding Dadri case, we asked the State government for a report and sent an advisory," Home Minister Rajnath Singh said.

Stating that there are limitations to Centre government, Singh added, "Maintaining law and order in the state is the responsibility of state government and we can't directly interfere."

"In a healthy democracy all political parties should try to see that peace is maintained," Singh added.
