Masala Padam is the debut directorial venture of Laxman Kumar who did cinematography for films like Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and Thillu Mullu remake. The film takes a dig at the critics and social media reviewers including blog writers.
A successful producer (Venkatraman) who is known for his masala flicks challenges a group of bloggers who tear apart each film, to come out with a decent script, which would satisfy all types of audiences in six months. After doing lot of research, they realize that for a movie to work it should have basic ingredients like action, romance, comedy and emotions in proper proportions. They decide to follow the life of three men who they accidentally meet. The first person is a middle class guy Mani (Mirchi Shiva) who works in MLM, a dreaded gangster Amudhan (Bobby Simha) and Krish (Gaurav) a rich spoilt brat. They hatch a plan to make one of their friends Diya (Lakshmi Devy), a photo journalist to befriend and flirt with all the three men so that they can get the real feel and episodes for their plot. Did they succeed in their plan?
Shiva manages to tickle your funny bones with his usual deadpan dialogue delivery style. Bobby breezes through his goon act once again. Lakshmy Devy though looks though a bit matured, is quite adequate in her role. Technically all the departments like camera, editing and music are just functional. The problem with the film is that it may have an interesting concept, but it errs in its execution thereby losing its sheen. Overall, the film can be enjoyed only in parts.
