Kochi: Fourteen years after the Aluva Matha ice plant murder case,  the culprit was arrested by the Crime Branch police from Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu on Thursday following a tip-off  provided by the intelligence.

The arrested was identified as Bellraji alias Chinnayya, 34, from Papanasam at Thanchavur in Tamil Nadu. He was working as a cleaner there.

The incident happened on August 13,  2001 when  Bellraji was working in the ice factory. He had a habit of absconding from work and the owner of the factory replaced him with Shibu, son of Thankappan of Kollankudi house at Mannanam near Chillathodu in Idukki.

Annoyed by  this, he murdered Shibu when he was sleeping in  his room  and absconded. There were 27 cuts on Shibu’s body.

Later,  Bellraji worked in Kolkata, Ahmadabad, Bhubaneswar and other northern states on shift basis.

The local police investigated the case first and later handed it over to the Crime Branch. In  2005,  the Aluva court declared him as an absconder
Crime Branch SP P.K. Madhu received the  information about the culprit a few days ago and a team of Crime Branch police headed by DySP Biju Stephan, detective inspector A.L. Yesudas, SI K.C. Balakrishnan and senior civil police officers Shibu Cheriyan and Anuraj arrested him.

He was produced before the court and remanded. As many as 12 cases have been registered against him in various police stations.
