Bengaluru: A 13-year-old boy, who was riding his bicycle on the way to buy medicines for his mother, was killed on the spot when he was run over by a lorry on Subramanyapura main road in Kadirenahalli on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Yousuf Khan, son of Musharaff Khan, an auto driver and a resident of Minaj Nagar in JHBC Layout, Banashankari 2nd stage.

According to the police, the accident happened around 9.45 am, near 4th cross in Minaj Nagar on Subramanyapura main road when Yousuf was riding his bicycle towards a medical shop for buying some medicines for his mother. His house was on the 3rd cross, about 100 metres from the spot where the accident occurred. As Yousuf was riding his cycle past a parked Tempo-Traveler near the 4th cross, a gas-cylinder laden lorry coming from his behind rammed into his bicycle. Yousuf’s bicycle was caught between the parked Tempo-Traveler and the lorry that subsequently ran over him when he fell down between the two vehicles. Yousuf sustained fatal head injuries and was lying at the spot until the police arrived, who shifted the victim to Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) where he was declared brought dead. “I regularly drop my three kids to school in my auto-rickshaw every day. As Monday was a holiday, Yousuf did not go to school and he had left home at 9.15 on his bicycle to buy medicines for his mother when he met with the accident,” said Musharaff Khan who was crying inconsolably before the morgue of KIMS. The victim’s body after the postmortem was handed over to the family members for final rites. Yousuf was the second of the three children of Musharaff, who was in Class 6 at the Crescent High School in Basavanagudi.

Huge crowds gathered at the spot and vandalised both the lorry and the Tempo-Traveler by pelting stones at the vehicles. The windscreens of both the lorry and the tempo-traveler were broken by the mob. The police had to resort to lathi charge in the area to bring the situation under control as the mob had planned to set ablaze the two vehicles and the lorry was laden with gas cylinders, said a police officer. The police have seized both the lorry bearing registration number KA-16-A 6030 along with the tempo-traveler.

The lorry driver fled the spot abandoning the vehicle fearing public wrath and later surrendered to the police. The driver, identified as Thyagaraj, 30, was arrested by the police and taken for a medical examination to ascertain whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol, the police said. The Kumaraswamy Layout traffic police have registered a case of accidental death due to rash and negligent driving and are investigating.
