Ancient temple renovation should be supervised: Madras High Court
The petitioner sought maintenance of temples which has archaeological importance and sculpture values
Chennai: The Madras High Court has directed that no renovation work should be carried out in temples which are of early Chola age unless it is technologically and properly supervised.
The First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana, before which an application filed by Shivakumar came up for hearing, passed the interim order.
The petitioner sought maintenance of temples which has archaeological importance and sculpture values. The court has already formed a committee to go into the issues related to renovation of temples.
The petitioner submitted that shoddy renovation has been done in the temples and this must be prevented. The Bench said “We direct that no renovation work should be carried out unless it is technologically and properly supervised as the claim is that after sand and water blasting immense damage has been caused to the statues.”
