HyderabadTalking about the ever increasing pressure on fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan on Monday urged for an increase in the usage of solar energy, especially in the agriculture sector.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar and workshop on ‘Towards a Sustainable and Affordable Power Sector’, Mr Narasimhan said that farmers in rural areas must be given free solar pumps and lamps instead of free power, which would reduce the use of fossil fuels and pave the way for a shift to green energy.

The CM’s principle secretary, Mr S. Narsinga Rao, pointed out that at the recently held UN General Assembly Session, the subject of sustainability and affordability of energy figured as one of the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG). He stressed that affordability was the key to achieving sustainability in the power sector.

Meanwhile, the chairman and managing director of TGenco and Transco, Mr D. Prabhakara Rao said that power utilities per se were not against renewable energy for optimum usage, but there was still a need to continue the present mixed energy generation like thermal and hydel power in order to keep base load.

The session was attended by representatives of the Central and state governments, advisor to the Telangana Chief Minister, Mr B.V. Papa Rao, chairman of IIT Guwahati, R.P. Singh, president of PPF, Mr P.C. Haladar, chairman of Power Grid Corporation, Mr I.S. Jha and chairman of TSDCL, Mr G. Raghuma Reddy among others.
