Mumbai: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sent a letter to the Maharashtra government expressing its concern over Indrani Mukerjea’s security in judicial custody. CBI has asked the state government to ensure appropriate security for her in jail.

CBI wrote this letter in the wake of her health conditions that had suddenly worsened in the jail that was especifically mentioned in the letter.

Indrani is a prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case. She has been in judicial custody since September 7 and is currently lodged in Byculla women’s jail.

“The state government must give appropriate security to Indrani Mukerjea during her judicial custody,” the letter written by joint director, special crime wing, New Delhi, stated. The letter has been addressed to Swadhin Kshatirya, chief secretary of the state.

Indrani was admitted to JJ Hospital on October 2 in an unconscious state and an inquiry was ordered to find the reason for her worsened health conditions. It was said that she might have overdosed on anti-depressants. Senior IPS officer Bipin Kumar Singh was appointed to probe the case and was given a week to submit its report.

The concern was raised by the CBI as the investigators probing this matter are still not sure as to what caused her health to deteriorate suddenly. While doctors in JJ Hospital maintained that she has recovered with the line of treatment for overdose, Mr Singh is also relying on the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report that rejects any overdose theory. However, the urine test report conducted by Hinduja Hospital found an overdose of anti-depressants.

The Sheena Bora case has recently been handed over to the CBI over allegations made against former Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria and current Mumbai Police Commissioner Ahmed Javed.

Indrani, along with her first husband Sanjiv Khanna and driver Shyam Rai, were arrested on August 25 this year in connection with Indrani’s daughter Sheena’s murder.
