BENGALURU: The CCB police who had arrested two members of notorious Irani gang, involved in various chain snatching cases, have cracked 26 more chain snatching cases after taking one of the accused into police custody.
On September 21, the police had arrested Abuzer Ali alias Abuzer, 26, and Abul Hasan alias Hasan, 23, both residents of Irani Colony in Jannath Nagar in Dharwad. Girish Rajegowda, alias Bombay Girisha, 38, who received robbed valuables from them, was also arrested. With their arrest, the police have cracked 41 cases of chain snatching registered in the city over the last six months and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 60 lakh.
“The police gathered information that after the two accused were sent to judicial custody, several people were visiting Abuzer in the jail and a tab was kept on the visitors. As we received information that Abuzer was involved in more chain snatching cases, we requested the court for his police custody. When he was taken into custody, he revealed that he was involved in 26 more chain snatching incidents in the city. He confessed that he had given the robbed chains to a pawn broker in Dharwad and 800 grams of gold jewels were recovered again,” the police said.
With this, the number of cases cracked with the arrest of the members of Irani gang has gone up to 67. “As Abuzer is involved in 67 chain snatching cases, we will book him under the Goonda Act. There are several other members of the gang still active and efforts are on to nab them,” Joint Commissioner (Crime) Chandrashekhar said.
