Hyderabad: Rajani, an elephant at Nehru Zoological Park, is going through trial runs for the annual Muharram procession. The procession starts at Bibi-ka-Alawa in Dabeerpura and ends at Chaderghat area. En-route, thousands of mourners from across the country join and cover the distance of around five km barefoot.
The elephant will be part of the annual procession for “Youm-e-Ashoora”, the 10th day of Muharram. Rajani has been earlier used for Bonalu processions and the elephant is an example of communal harmony in the state, said officials. “The trial run is being taken up every morning at 10 am from the Zoo till Bahadurpura in the presence of authorities. It will continue till the day when the historic “Bibi-Ka-Alam” is taken out from the Ashoorkhana in Dabeerpura. Awareness will be created about not disturbing the elephant during the procession,” zoo officials said. Rajani’s mother Hyder too used to carry the “Alam” for the procession.
