Hyderabad: A police constable's wife allegedly hanged herself to death at their home in Chandrayangutta on Wednesday. Pooja, a second year engineering student, was the wife of G. Praveen, who is working at the Kanchanbagh police station. The parents of Pooja alleged that Praveen was harassing her for a dowry of '5 lakh and used to assault her.

Pooja, 21, is the daughter of CRPF constable Rangaiah, who is working in Manipur. Nearly two years ago she fell in love with Praveen. They got married in February 2014. Both the families had opposed the marriage. They were staying at a rented flat near Gandhi Statue X roads.

On Wednesday, Praveen left for work and Pooja was at home. When Praveen came home for lunch he found the door latched from within. He went inside through the backdoor and found Pooja hanging from the fan. He brought her down and informed the police.

Pooja's parents alleged that she did not commit suicide and was killed by Praveen. "He was harassing my daughter for dowry. He also used to beat and torture her. He killed my daughter and made up the suicide story," said Pooja's mother in her complaint.

Based on the complaint the police registered a case. "We are checking facts. Based on that we will take action," said inspector N. Rama Rao.
