Madurai: Court seeks report on teacher who eloped with minor boy
The counsel alleged the teacher had kidnapped the teenager
Madurai: The Madras high court has directed police to file a report on Friday about action taken to trace a minor boy from Tenkasi town with whom a 29-year-old teacher had eloped in March.
The Madurai bench of the high court issued the directive to the superintendent of police of Tirunelveli district during a hearing on Thursday. Justices S Nagamuthu and V S Ravi gave the direction in response to a habeas corpus petition filed by Mariammal, the mother of 15-year-old boy.
Mariammal’s counsel told the court that police had not registered a case so far under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Police had only registered a case about the “missing” boy when he did not return home on March 31 but had not taken any steps to trace him, the counsel said.
The counsel alleged the teacher had kidnapped the teenager and Mariammal feared her son’s life was in danger.
Though she had sent a detailed representation to the Chief Minister’s Cell and to senior police officials, no effective step had been taken so far, the counsel told the judges.
After the boy left his house, gold jewellery weighing 136 grams was found missing and Rs 10,000 was withdrawn from an ATM.
