He saw the dizzying heights of success in the initial phase of his career and then went through an uneventful phase till Vikramadithyan gifted him a fresh lease of life. Unni Mukundan did not choose to brood over the vagaries of his career but concentrated on his fitness regimen and education. He is now happy that a film that was announced almost two and a half years ago has at long last found its way to the IFFK venue. The film is Kaattum Mazhayum directed by Harikumar in which he plays a character very unlike his muscle flexing roles.
Talking about the film which has not been released in theatres commercially, Unni says, “At last the film is being screened at the prestigious IFFK venue. To be very frank, I really do not know when it will hit the regular screens but am happy that as an actor I will be getting a certain amount of recognition from the festival audience. Those who have seen the film have appreciated it and I have played a very different character from my other films.” Unni plays the role of a Namboothiri boy Hari Narayanan who is facing acute financial crisis and his home is on the verge of being auctioned by the bank. He continues, “It is at such a juncture that he decides to donate his liver to a Muslim man. How the conservative society views his decision and how the life of Hari Narayanan changes forms the crux of the story and the film also explores the theme of organ donation. I have intense emotional scenes in the film and have put in one of my best performances, which was why I was sad and disappointed when the film was stuck.”
Unni is currently shooting for S. Binu’s film Style which has him returning to a genre he is very comfortable with — action. An out and out entertainer, the film has action, fun, romance and humour. Unni speaks about his character, “I play a fun loving guy who does car styling. There are a lot of action sequences and about 25 days have been set aside just for the action sequences to ensure that there is something novel.” Says a delighted Unni, “After Mallu Singh I will be doing fight sequences and dancing as well and I am looking forward to this because I personally feel I can handle action and dance well. My role in the film is that of a fitness freak, so it is like the real me.”
