BENGALURU: Women and child welfare minister Umashree on Friday declared that the state government would formulate a comprehensive policy to protect the rights of sex-workers and sexual minorities.

Jayamala to head panel
Ms. Umashree told reporters after felicitating Congress MLC and actress Jayamala, who would be heading the committee to formulate a policy on sex workers here, “The state government is not in a hurry to announce its policy to protect the rights of sex workers. The biggest problem faced by the members of this community is whether sex trade should be legalised or not? “The state government is looking for an answer to this question. I can only assure that the state government will be sympathetic at this juncture,” she added.

On her part Ms Jayamala said that she was honoured to head this committee and the policy to protect sex workers to be formulated would be a comprehensive one.

“Sex workers are worst affected and seen as criminals. We need to be sympathetic towards this community. We need to look at sexual minorities too as they are worst affected, and our policy needs to be comprehensive one.

“All those who are involved in this trade, be it Devadasis, sex workers or sexual minorities must be covered,” Ms Jayamala said.
