A ‘model’ candidate for BJP
Henna has been associated with social groups and voluntary organisations like YMCA and AIESC
KOcHI: Twentytwo-year old B Tech graduate Henna Maria Kennedy, who was shortlisted for the finals of last years’ Femina Miss India contest, is contesting on a BJP ticket in Kalamassery municipality. She is seeking the people’s mandate in St. Joseph ward.
The party has decided to field the young and glamorous Henna after her father Kennedy, an active member of Kerala Congress (Nationalist), expressed his willingness.
“Most of my family members are Congress supporters. But, my dad is a member of Kerala Congress (Nationalist), an NDA ally. The party approached me and I readily agreed,” she told DC.
Henna who has just completed B Tech from Christ Knowledge City Engineering College, Muvattupuzha, is active in modelling and social work. She has also won the runner-up title in the Navy Queen contest.
Asked why she was contesting on a BJP ticket, she said that compared to other political parties, BJP gave more opportunities and maximum representation to women.
“The St. Joseph ward with a Christian majority population is traditionally a pro-UDF division. There are several convents and seminaries here. Since my dad is close to the Church, I am hopeful of getting their votes,” she said.
Henna has been associated with social groups and voluntary organisations like YMCA and AIESC. AIESC (pronounced eye-sek) was originally an acronym for Association Internationale des Étudiants en Sciences Économiques et Commerciales.
The UDF candidate in the division is Veemol Varghese while the LDF is fielding Preethi Pious. In 2010, A.D Jose Devassy, Congress rebel candidate, won the seat.
