Geeta kin ready for DNA test

Lucknow: A family in Pratapgarh that claims that Geeta, the deaf-mute Indian woman living in Pakistan after accidentally crossing the borders over a decade ago, has said that it is prepared to take a DNA test to prove that the girl is their daughter. The family is contesting the claim of the Jharkhand family that has been identified by Geeta as her family from a photograph sent to her by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Geeta has identified her father, step-mother and siblings but a DNA test will be conducted to confirm parentage, according to the ministry of external affairs.

Ramraj and Anara Devi of Purerama village in Pratapgarh, who claim to be Geeta’s parents, told reporters that their daughter, originally named Savita, had gone missing from Chhapra, Bihar in 2004 when she had gone there to visit her brother. “I am ready to undergo a DNA test to prove that she is my daughter and when she will be back in India, I will go to meet her. Since so many years have passed by, it is possible that she may not be able to identify her family through photographs but we have already recognized her,” said Anara Devi.
