Kochi: As the last date for withdrawal of candidates for the local body elections ended on Saturday, the Congress-led United Democratic Front is facing problems of over dozen rebels contesting against the official nominees of the party.
Rebels are also in the fray in the nearby municipalities such as Kalamasserry and Thrikkakkara. Although the last date for withdrawing the nomination was over Congress leaders are making last minute efforts to persuade rebel candidates not enter into active election campaign.
Vinnee Abraham, a relative of outgoing mayor Tony Chammany, is amongst the rebels in the fray in Kochi Corporation. Sunita Dickson, PK Babu, Ratnama Raju, Elizabeth are some of the other prominent rebels in the UDF campa.
The CPM-led LDF is also not free from the rebel head ache, at least two candidates are contesting against the official nominees in Pallurathy division. PK Shamsudeen and VP Sasi, former councilors of the CPM are contesting against the official nominees of the party.
In Thrikkakara municipality Congress and Kerala Congress (M) candidates are contesting against four wards while a Janata Dal (United) candidate is also contesting against an official nominee of congress.
