Chennai: A 29-year-old woman hailing from Mandapam camp in Ramanathapuram approached the city police commissioner’s office on Monday seeking the police department’s help to rescue her mother stranded in Saudi Arabia as a ‘bonded labour’.
M. Dilani who came with her two children and relatives in tow filed her petition during the grievance meet. “My younger brother, Rosanthan died last year after developing a health complication. My mother M. Malar Rani (46), took loans from several people to treat his ailment and was in debts. To overcome this, she was looking for jobs abroad when a person running a travel agency in Thousand lights, Chennai approached her with a job in Saudi Arabia,” Dilani told mediapersons at the commissioner’s office.
Speaking to DC, Dilani said her mother was offered a monthly salary of Rs 25, 000 in July this year and was sent to the Middle Eastern country after the family paid Rs 65, 000 to an agent for arranging the employment.
However, things turned out different when she reached there and she is being treated like a slave, Dilani said. According to Dilani, her mother is being beaten up by her employers who make her work close to 20 hours a day. “When we approached the agent here, he demanded Rs 2 lakh more to bring my mother back,” Dilani said adding that her mother has been pleading over phone to rescue her whenever she gets a chance to speak.
