Time 6.30 pm. We are waiting at the Lulu Marriot, Kochi, for actor Vikram, who was there for the promotion of his new film 10 Enradhukulla, directed by Vijay Milton. A few minutes later, he walks in with a smile. And he opens the chat by talking about his his new film.
“It is a road film. It is a different character I am doing after I. Definitely, a character I have not played before. I am quite excited,” he says. The film releases today and Vikram is hopeful of the outcome.
Saying that his fans in Kerala have never let him down, he adds, “In 10 Enradhukulla, I play the role of a car driver. It is a low-key character, at the same time stylish. His name is Edison. He is somebody who is very sharp, smart and easy-going. He meets his girl who is naive. Wherever she goes, there will be some trouble. The movie shows what happens between them as they travel together. I think it is going to be a pleasant surprise for the audience. I know that they will enjoy the film in theatres. Recently, in Tamil, people are looking for something different and fresh and I feel that this will be that film.”
Vikram, who was impressed by Vijay Milton’s Goli Soda asked him if he had any story for him. “Then he told me this story. I was very excited because it was a different role. I really loved the way he narrated the story. But, while shooting, I realised that he was taking it even better than what he said. The movie is done in a realistic way, but it contains all commercial elements. The way he put all these together is refreshing,” says Vikram, who is well-known for his preparations for each character.
Did he do any such homework for Edison? “This one was more about being very normal, yet indifferent. So, I had to ease up a lot, especially after I, which was very dramatic, and performance-oriented. The preparation was to get into the skin of that kind of role and mood,” says Vikram explaining that Edison is a very natural character with some heroism. “Though not heroic completely, there is a lot of conflict in him, which makes him interesting.”
Quiz him whether heroism of on-screen characters have an impact on youngsters, pat comes the reply. “Most ideas, we pick up from life. There were instances where movies have affected people. That is quite normal. Now, there are more distractions like Internet and social media for youngsters. So, we cannot say that movie is the only thing that influences people,” says Vikram who is choosy about characters. And he says that the characters in Raavan and Deiva Thirumagal posed him the biggest challenge.
“Raavan was a greater challenge as I needed to become a huge personality in every sense. The character in Deiva Thirumagal is one I have empathised and felt compassionate about. I realised what they go through.”
In his opinion, if the script excites him, it will definitely impress the audience too. “When I listen to the script, I should feel charged. It should be a movie that would create a history or spoken about for a long time. It is not that my decisions will always work out. There will be times where you will have a good script, but it won’t end up well. That would be because of not executing the script properly,” he says adding that he is listening to scripts in Malayalam as well. “I am waiting for the script. Discussions are going on. I have told a couple of directors that I liked the script. It will happen very soon,” says Vikram, who is in love with Kerala. “It has got the best tourist destinations and cuisine. Karimeen is my favourite. Every time, I return from here I wish Madras was like this place, full of greenery,” he sums up.
