Hyderabad: The nine-day Bathukamma festival ended on Tuesday. Saddula Bathukamma ended on a grand note at all the water tanks in the city, with Tank Bund being the main attraction. Over 30,000 women danced to traditional songs of the state festival and tonnes of flowers were immersed in the tanks as per tradition.

Interestingly, both TS Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao and Governor  E.S.L. Narasimhan, skipped the celebrations. The government had allocated over Rs 10 crore for Bathukamma arrangements. The festival, celebrated in honour of goddess Gauri, saw thousands flocking to LB Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. As folk dancers moved to rhythmic drumbeats, elegantly dressed ladies danced around Bathukamma (the flower stack) singing songs and clapping. Women with Bathukammas started arriving towards evening at Tank Bund from LB Stadium in a rally.

The Hussainsagar area was decorated with lights and flowers, the highlight being LED balloons. Addressing the crowds, MP K. Kavita said, “Bathukamma festival brings life to Telangana. It is the major festival of the state’s women. Telangana turns floral during the festival with colourful flower decorations. The festival is the cultural signature of Telangana and its pride.”
