Hyderabad: The police booked four persons for capturing Indian Rollers, known popularly as Palapittas, and displaying them at the Katta Maisamma, Skandagiri and Kanakadurga temples on Dasara.
An FIR was registered for violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 by the Chilkalguda police.
A team comprising volunteers from the Telangana forest department, Blue Cross, People for Animals and Humane Society International-India checked different temples for two consecutive days to spot illegal display of palapittas.
The Palapitta is considered sacred to Lord Vishnu and many consider it auspicious if they see it on Dasara. To cash in on this, poachers hunt the birds and place them on display for a fee.
