Kerala Police arrest sawmill owner on murder charges

A case was registered against him under section 308 of IPC for attempt to murder

Kochi: A sawmill owner, who allegedly tried to murder a person for raising pollution charges against the mill at Pothanikkad in Ernakulam district,  was arrested  late on Wednesday  night.

The police identified him as Abdul Salam, 43, son of Sayyid of Nedungattu house at Kavunkara Karayil,   Pothanikkad. According to the police,  Salim,  49, son of Hassan of Kambakudiyil house at East Vazhappilli near Velloorkunnam,   Pothanikkad,  had filed a complaint  against him at the Pollution Control Board, Forest Department and the local panchayat saying that the sawmill owned by Abdul Salam was causing environmental pollution.

While Salim was on his way to his house on his two-wheeler at 11 a.m. on October 4, Abdul Salam tried to murder him by ramming his car against the bike at Mavudi,   Pothanikkad. 

However, Salim survived with minor injuries and Abdul Salam was absconding after the incident.

As per the directions of Ernakulam Rural SP  Mr G.H. Yathish Chandra, a  police team headed by Pothanikkad  Sub-Inspector Prince Joseph arrested him as he came to his house on Wednesday.

A case was  registered against him under section 308 of IPC for attempt to murder, and  the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court remanded him  for 14 days.
