Northeast monsoon to set in next week
Monsoon official said the state would receive good rainfall this season and a depression is expected
Chennai: Wet days are here again in Chennai. The city receivedmoderate rainfall on Friday. Officials said these are pre-northeast monsoon showers as the monsoon is likely to set in only from October 27-28. Depression in the sea is also expected which may grow into a cyclone and hit the state coast by month-end.
Thambi Narayanan, deputy director general, meteorological department, Chennai, credited Friday’s rain to an upper air circulation over southwest Bay of Bengal, off Sri Lanka coast. He said the northeast monsoon was on course and would set in from October 28. “The pre-monsoon showers were not wide spread. South Tamil Nadu received more rain on Friday compared to other parts of the state, where isolated rainfall was noticed. Similar showers have been forecast for the next 48 hours”.
On monsoon forecast, the official said the state would receive good rainfall this season and a depression is expected. That may develop into a cycle by October 29-30. Longer and heavy showers are expected to soak the city from October 26.
Another weather blogger Ehsan Ahmed, founder of KeaWeather blog, said numerical weather models continue to show favourable moist easterly winds making a comeback after October 25 followed by a low pressure area (LPA) in the Bay around October 27.
