Family opens museum in Kuttanad today

Historical records and artifacts dating back to AD 1102 to be on display

Thiruvananthapuram: A Syro Malabar Christian family which has a history dating back to AD 1102 has come up with a family museum in Kuttanad.
 
The museum of Thekkethalackal Karikampallil family of Edathua will have photos, historical records and other artifacts relating to the family. The museum will become functional at Chekkidikkad near Edathua from Monday. 
 
This is the first family museum to come up in Kuttanad. 
Saji Karikampallil, a civil engineer by profession and  a member of the family who is in charge of the construction, told Deccan Chronicle that history of the family dated back to AD 1102 when one Chacko Perumal came to Ambalapuzha as a caretaker of the Chempakasserry king. He was granted a large area of land for cultivation at Edathua, Mr Karikampallil said.
 
One of the main attractions of the museum will be a 70-year-old historically significant photograph which has 118 members of the family in it. Now the family which is spread out across the world has 2,000 
to 3,000 members, Mr Karikampallil said.
 
One of the members of the family, a well-known linguistic in Malayalam language Scaria Zacharia was selected to head 'Gundert Chair' at the Malayalam University of Tubingen in Germany, Mr Karikampallil said.
